How Platforms Handle Images

Cropping

Most platforms crop images to fit their aspect ratio:

Original: 1200 × 630
Twitter crops to: 1200 × 600 (removes 30px top/bottom)

Solution: Keep important content in the center.

Scaling

Large images are scaled down:

Original: 2400 × 1260
Displayed as: 1200 × 630 (50% scale)

Solution: Design at 1200×630 for sharpest results.

Compression

Platforms compress images:

Original: 500KB PNG
After upload: ~100KB JPEG

Solution: Use high-contrast text for readability after compression.

Safe Zones

Design with safe zones to prevent cropping issues:

┌─────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Unsafe Zone (may be cropped) │
│ ┌───────────────────────────────────┐ │
│ │ │ │
│ │ SAFE ZONE │ │
│ │ (Keep important content) │ │
│ │ │ │
│ └───────────────────────────────────┘ │
│ Unsafe Zone (may be cropped) │
└─────────────────────────────────────────┘

Safe Zone: 1100 × 550 (centered)
Margin: 50px on all sides

Output Format Selection

PNG (Default)

Best for:

  • Text-heavy images
  • Graphics with transparency
  • Sharp edges and lines

File size: Larger (~200-500KB)

JPEG

Best for:

  • Photo-heavy images
  • Faster loading
  • Smaller file sizes

File size: Smaller (~50-150KB)

Quality vs File Size

QualityFile SizeBest For
High (PNG)300-500KBImportant pages
Medium (JPEG 85%)100-200KBGeneral use
Low (JPEG 70%)50-100KBHigh-traffic pages

Retina/HiDPI Considerations

For retina displays, consider 2x resolution:

Standard: 1200 × 630
Retina: 2400 × 1260

However, most social platforms don't benefit from this, so standard resolution is usually sufficient.

Testing Your Images

Visual Testing

  1. Generate your image
  2. View at 100% zoom
  3. Check text is readable
  4. Verify no important content is at edges

Platform Testing

  1. Facebook Sharing Debugger
  2. Twitter Card Validator
  3. LinkedIn Post Inspector

Mobile Preview

Check how images appear on mobile:

  • Text should be readable at small sizes
  • Key information visible in thumbnail view
  • Colors contrast well on small screens

Best Practices Summary

  1. Use 1200×630 for universal compatibility
  2. Keep text in center to avoid cropping
  3. Use high contrast for readability after compression
  4. Test on multiple platforms before launching
  5. Optimize file size without sacrificing quality
